FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 18, 2021

The College Democrats of America Executive Board issued the following statement:

“On Tuesday, eight more innocent lives were lost to gun violence in Atlanta. Six of the eight victims were Asian women. Our hearts go out to the families and friends of each one of the victims.”

“The shootings appear to be at the “intersection of gender-based violence, misogyny, and xenophobia,” State Representative Bee Nguyen said, the first Vietnamese-American to serve in the Georgia House and a frequent advocate for women and communities of color. While police have yet to issue a specific motive, we know all of these issues are inextricably intertwined, and to address one, we have to address the others.”

“CDA unequivocally condemns these attacks. We stand with the AAPI community, and we work to create a space that promotes equity and respect, free of hate, aggression, ignorance, and intolerance. It is imperative that we acknowledge this as part of a growing problem here in our country, particularly amidst a spike in hate crimes against Asian-Americans during the pandemic. It is our responsibility to educate ourselves and fight racism, misogyny, and all of their intersections. This must end.”
