WASHINGTON, D.C. — The College Democrats of America issued this statement on the Biden administration’s decision to extend the pause on student loan repayments:

College Democrats of America commends the Biden administration’s decision to extend the pause on federal student loan repayments through May 1, 2022.

At a time of historic economic recovery in the United States, this extended pause will empower college students and young Americans to continue contributing to, investing in, and expanding our economy. Make no mistake: this decision comes after weeks and months of advocacy from elected officials, organizers, and organizations like College Democrats of America. As we continue to undergo a historic, multifaceted recovery, we must continue to advocate and speak up because when we organize, we win.

We also know that the student debt crisis will not be solved by one payment delay. While we welcome President Biden’s decision today, the administration must go further and cancel student loan debt in full. Canceling student debt will remove the impossible debt loads facing millions of college students and young Americans across the country, help close the racial wealth gap, and boost millennial homeownership. Furthermore, student debt cancellation will empower the next generation of Americans to a future of economic opportunity, prosperity, and equality. College Democrats of America join in calling for the Biden Administration to cancel all student loan debt.
