WASHINGTON, D.C. — The College Democrats of America issued this statement following President Biden’s speech in Atlanta, Georgia:
We stand behind President Biden’s support for the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and applaud his support for changes to the Jim Crow filibuster, allowing the Senate to pass democracy-saving legislation.
Voting rights are fundamental to the continuity and strength of our democracy. We’ve seen international actors influencing the outcome of our election. We’ve seen domestic actors flagrantly ignoring the Constitution and principles on which our country was founded. We’ve seen state lawmakers — with surgical precision — chip away at the right to vote. And we know that targets of disenfranchisement are disproportionately communities of color, elders, Americans with disabilities, and college students across the country. We must take action now with the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to ensure that no radical Republican can undermine the fundamental right to vote.
We also know that the Jim Crow filibuster is a key obstacle to passing voting rights legislation in the Senate. We call on the Senate to abolish the filibuster in its entirety to open the doors for voting justice, racial justice, economic justice, environmental justice, and so much more. We must stop allowing an unconstitutional appendage of Jim Crow Congresses to obstruct our work in building a fairer, more equitable future.
Let’s get to work.
