WASHINGTON, D.C. — The College Democrats of America issued this statement on the one-year anniversary of the deadly insurrection at the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021:

One year ago, former President Trump and his Republican henchmen planned and fanned the flames of a deadly insurrection aimed at preventing Congress from performing its constitutional obligation in certifying the results of the Electoral College.

We will continue to condemn this heinous act committed by white supremacists, terrorists, and MAGA militants who, at the words of a demagogue, sought to destroy the US Capitol — an international symbol of democracy. Make no mistake: their work in destroying our democracy is not done. As we speak, they are sowing discord and distrust in our electoral systems and undermining our democratic institutions. From limiting the right to vote to drawing gerrymandered districts, Republicans across the country are using every tool at their disposal to ensure their return to power.

In refusing to hold Trump or any of his co-conspirators accountable for the deadly January 6 insurrection, the Republican Party has demonstrated just how complicit and cowardly they are. Unlike the Republican Party, CDA is committed to ensuring that the insurrection that happened on January 6 — or any other anti-democratic, anti-American event like it — will never happen again.

That work starts with ensuring that a Speaker McCarthy never sees the light of day. That work starts with ensuring that a Majority Leader McConnell is a thing of the past.

That work starts with ensuring the passage of voting protections.

That work starts with ensuring the permanent end of the Jim Crow filibuster.

For the sake of our democracy, we need to get to work.
